This is the eternal battle in nerd culture and fandom – who is the bigger and better company – DC or Marvel? At the risk of sounding clichéd, I’ll state at the outset that the answer to that is subjective. And may I add, there is no conclusive answer to this question. But in order to provoke reactions, let me ask again, “DC or Marvel – which is better?” “DC of course,” shouts the Devil’s Advocate! So what do our friends at Wikipedia have to say about the Comic Book Giant that is DC?
“DC Comics, Inc. is an American comic book publisher. It is the publishing unit of DC Entertainment, a subsidiary ofWarner Bros., a division of Time Warner. DC Comics is one of the largest, oldest, and most successful companies operating in American comic books, and produces material featuring numerous well-known heroic characters including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, Shazam, Martian Manhunter,Hawkman and Green Arrow. The fictional DC universe also features teams such as the Justice League, the Justice Society of America, and the Teen Titans, and well-known villains such as Joker, LexLuthor, The Cheetah, Vandal Savage,Riddler, Catwoman, Darkseid, Ra’s al Ghul, Deathstroke, General Zod, Professor Zoom, Sinestro, Black Adam andBrainiac. The company has also published non-DC Universe-related material, including Watchmen, V for Vendetta and many titles under their alternative imprint Vertigo.”
Today, we are going to discuss why and what makes DC the more awesome of the two. So without beating around the bush, let’s get you some facts to corroborate and support our position and prove once and for all DC is better than Marvel!
5. In DC’s Animations We Trust, Marvel’s Bust
Simply put, when it comes to Animated Series and Films, DC has had a phenomenal track record. Do you remember Batman: The Animated Series? Do you recall Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox? Of course, you do. They were super hits. Animated superhero flicks are best done by DC hands down. That they have been at the forefront in this department is reflected by the amount of success they have achieved with over 60 animated films and shows in the last 45 years. Beat that Marvel hah!
4. More Depth in Villain’s Characterization
There is not an iota of doubt that DC has kickass superheroes. To complement them, you need equally deep villains – personality, motivations, schemes, etc. I will not go on and on to prove my point. Let’s do an experiment, humor me.
Close your eyes and clear your mind for a moment………. Now, quickly say aloud the names of the first few DC villains to pop into your head. Chances are high that you spoke aloud the names – Joker, Lex Luthor? Again chances are high that regardless of your answer, fact remains that it came to you instantly.Let’s try this again. Repeat the entire process of clearing your mind and all………. only this time, name the first Marvel villain to pop into your head as quickly as you can! Yup. You had a tougher time to instantly recall a name.
Why the differences? The only explanation to this, in my opinion is that, basically villains play a much less dominant role in the Marvel universe. They are there as the antagonists to be beaten in the end.On the other hand DC villains are more iconic and classy. Equal effort is devoted to their characterization, personality and progression, making them more relatable and loveable, even when they’re bashing up your favorite superhero.
